Nevin Anthony

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nevin Anthony (Nev) on Monday 7th October. Nevin passed away peacefully at home at the age of 94 after a long period of failing health, during which time he was faithfully looked after by Roger.

Nev, as he was affectionately known to all, was born on Christmas Day 1929 and was brought up in Sgwâr Lodge and Tirprys in Tycroes. After leaving school, he joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was posted to mainland Europe to police the aftermath of WW2. He then volunteered for the Northumberland Fusiliers, serving with them in Korea where he was awarded the Military Medal for an act of outstanding bravery. He was captured as a prisoner of war where he had a torrid time, the likes of which we cannot begin to understand.

He was a regular player for Tycroes RFC and was in the Cup winning side of 1954. He rose to higher things and was awarded a Welsh Services cap against New Zealand.

Nevin was married to Marian and they had a son Philip, both of whom pre-diseased him, and he lived in Garnant and also played for Amman United, serving as Secretary for many years. Nev’s father played for Tycroes, as did all his nephews Eric Anthony, Roger Anthony and Elfed, Robert, Irfon and Alun Higgins.

He was a gentleman in the true meaning of the word and always had a smile on his face for one and all. Funeral details will be posted when available.

Gorffwys mewn hedd Nev, mawr fydd dy golled, Rest in peace Nev, you will be greatly missed.

Meirion Powell.

Chairman/Cadeirydd
